Easy Podcast: Víctor Jara, el cantor del pueblo

Víctor Jara was a singer-songwriter, teacher, theater director and political activist from Chile who was brutally murdered by Pinochet’s military regime.

Famous for his folk protest songs and his key role in the social musical movement “Nueva canción chilena” (New Chilean Song), Jara was an ardent supporter of Chilean President Salvador Allende.

After Allende’s government was overthrown in a military coup, Jara was arrested, tortured, and murdered as part of the new regime’s ideological cleansing.
