Cenotes are a type of natural pit that exposes groundwater. Although there are similar pits in the world, the term ‘cenotes’ usually refers to the ones found in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

Cenotes had a special place in Mayan culture and society, and the most important one is located in Chichén Itzá. Devoted to Chaak, the Mayan god of rain, this sacred pit was used exclusively for ceremonies and sacrifices.
