The future tense

USES OF THE FUTURE TENSE:

1. It is used to express predictions or asumptions:

  • Lloverá mañana. It will rain tomorrow.
  • Creo que no terminará la presentación a tiempo. I don’t think that he will finish the presentation on time.

2. It is used to express orders emphatically:

  • Me harás caso porque soy tu madre. You will listen to me because I’m your mother.
  • Comerás tus vegetales. You will eat your vegetables.

CONJUGATION OF IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE FUTURE TENSE:

There are twelve common verbs that are irregular in the future tense. Their endings are regular (that is to say, they follow the same rules shown in the chart above), but their stems change. Since the endings are the same as in the model, the following list will only show the conjugation for the 1st person singular, “yo”:

Decir (To say) Yo diré. I will say.
Tener (To have) Yo tendré. I will have.
Querer (To want) Yo querré. I will want.
Haber (To have) Yo habré. I will have.
Hacer (To make, to do) Yo haré. I will make/do.
Poder (To be able) Yo podré. I will be able.
Poner (To put) Yo pondré. I will put.
Salir (To leave) Yo saldré. I will leave.
Valer (To have value) Yo valdré. I will have value.
Saber (To know) Yo sabré. I will know.
Venir (To come) Yo vendré. I will come.
Caber (To fit) Yo cabré. I will fit.
