Oraciones de relativo

These type of sentences have an adjective clause which is always introduced by a relative pronoun: (el) que, quien, cuanto, (el) cual, cuyo; and the relative adverbs: donde, como, cuando, etc.

The relative pronoun que is used when referring to people or things:

  • Las mujeres que están con el guía son turistas.
  • La cámara que compraste está sobre la mesa.

If a preposition is joined with the relative pronoun “que”, an article is usually inserted:

  • El libro con el que aprendí español es muy interesante.

If the noun is removed, it is replaced by the combination of an article placed before “que”:

  • ¿Quieres esta corbata de regalo?
  • No, quiero la que es más cara.

The relative pronoun “quien” is used when referring to people:

  • La persona a quien le di el regalo es mi jefa.

The relative pronoun “cuanto(a/s)” is used when referring to quantity:

  • Beban cuanta cerveza puedan.

The relative adverbs “donde”, “cuando”, “como” are used when referring to a place, a moment in time, or a way of doing something:

  • Este es el restaurante donde comimos la semana pasada.
  • Dinos el día cuando naciste.
  • Esa no es la manera como debes estudiar.

Notice that no article appears between prepositions (a, con, para, por, desde) and the pronoun quien(es) and the adverb donde:

  • ¿Es usted la persona con quien hablé ayer por teléfono?
  • En la foto puedes ver la calle por donde pasamos.
