Have you ever wondered if there was a difference between “asimismo” or “así mismo”? How about “a sí mismo”?
In general terms, it goes like this:
Asimismo = también (also, too), además (in addition.)
Así mismo = de la misma manera (in the same way or manner.)
A sí mismo = a él mismo / a ella misma (to himself / herself.)
Now let’s take a closer look:
1) Asimismo is an adverb of manner, and we use it to add information:
- Asimismo, el precio de la habitación de hotel incluye la plaza del garage. In addtion, the price of the hotel room includes a parking space.
- Él dijo, asimismo, que luego de graduarse quería trabajar en el negocio familiar. He also said that after graduation he wanted to work in the family business.
2) Así mismo combines the adverb así and the adjective mismo to emphasize the way something is being done or has happened:
- Sigamos trabajando así mismo y terminaremos el proyecto muy pronto. Let’s continue working like this and we will finish the project very soon.
- – ¿Leíste las instrucciones? – Sí, lo hice así mismo como está explicado. – Did you read the instructions? – Yes, I did it just like it says.
3) A sí mismo expresses a reflexive action for the third person and it must agree on gender and number to the subject:
- Ella se dijo a sí misma que iba a aprobar el examen. She told herself that she would pass the exam.
- Juan tiene mucha confianza; se conoce bien a sí mismo. Juan is very confident; he knows himself well.
